Orthodontics

When you have irregularities with the positioning of your teeth or facial structure, you may need an orthodontist. Depending on how severe the misalignment is, it can drastically alter your appearance.

Dentists and orthodontists have different schooling, therefore, different specialties. This difference is why dentists focus on maintenance and prevention, while orthodontists more so focus on cosmetics.

When You Need an Orthodontist

There are a few reasons to visit your local orthodontist. These professionals can treat bite irregularities (crossbite, overbite, and underbite) and even TMJ. They do so by using clear aligners and braces. To see examples of before and after’s, check out our smile gallery.

Crossbite

Crossbite occurs when your bite is off horizontally. This can occur from genetics, delayed loss of baby teeth, or permanent teeth growing poorly. Even thumb sucking can throw your bite off-kilter.

Overbite

This happens when you have teeth that jut out past your bottom jaw or if your top jaw shifts forward. Chronic nail-biting, chewing pencils, TMJ, bruxism (grinding), or genetics can be the culprit.

Underbite

More often than not, you inherited your case of underbite from a family member. This is due to genetics determining your jaw and teeth’ shape and size. Other reasons are broken jawbones, other blunt injuries, and tumors.

What are Clear Aligners?

Also known as Invisalign®, these have the same goals as braces but follow a different path. Whereas braces require many visits, clear aligner patients have far fewer appointments. This is due to receiving a set of aligners and only visiting occasionally to ensure proper progress.

Each aligner has slots your teeth slip inside. Each groove is just straighter than your teeth, which slowly and gently coaxes your teeth to their proper position. Each Invisalign clear aligner will last 1-2 weeks, then you slip the new set on.
